The Legend of Kunigunde's Gloves

The Empress Kunigunde (later Saint Kunigunde, Kunegunde, Cunigunde) sponsored the building of a great cathedral in Bamberg (Germany).

One day the Empress entered the cathedral in order to pray. She was so deep in pious revery, that she didn't notice that her waiting women had been held up outside and she was now alone. When she ended her prayers, she stood up and walked towards the altar, in order to leave a donation in the offertory. As she did so, she pulled off her gloves and passed them behind her, expecting one of her women to catch them as usual. But the gloves did not fall to the floor. Instead a beam of light fell through the windows behind the altar, and seemed to carry the gloves, floating gently in the air. When Kunigunde turned around to leave, she saw that she was alone and the gloves in the air before her. Then she knew that God watched over her, and had sent his angels to serve her.
